Reed Creek Park Coal Ash -Mooresville NC

The Tire Masters coal ash sinkhole, in cancer cluster Mooresville, NC, has been sitting open since at least 2019.

Coal ash has been leaking into Reed Creek, since at least 2020, from the Tiremasters coal ash sinkhole. The contamination now runs 1.3 miles, to an outfall on Lake Norman. Reed Creek runs the backyards.

The town of Mooresville, Duke Energy, the Tire Masters, and the Randy Marion came to a deal, after years of the ash sinkhole sitting open. The town purchased the Tire Masters property. Duke Energy agreed to clean up their coal ash out of Reed Creek.

No independent scientist have been brought in. The NC-DEQ never tested the coal ash at the site, never tested for groundwater contamination, no air monitoring, no radiation testing. The Tire Masters remained open, until they sold to the town.

In March of 2024, CCA-NC went out with an environmental specialist hired by Earthjustice, to several coal ash structural fills around Mooresville. We found extensive coal ash contamination in Reed Creek. The alarms were going off on the geiger counter.

Two samples were obtained, and sent to two separate labs. All came back showing high radium 228 and 228 levels.

In August of 2024, the town of Mooresville took random bore samples from Reed Creek Park. In Sept, results were released to the public, with no findings of coal ash.

So we took a trip to Reed Creek Park, which is a little below the area where we had taken the samples. Only thirty feet from the town had taken bore samples, we discovered what looks to be extensive coal ash contamination.

They tested the park, but didn’t walk the four feet into the woods, to take a peek into Reed Creek.

The “possible” coal ash in Reed Creek Park set off our alarms. It needs to be tested for radium 226 & 228, uranium, thorium, and several heavy metals like arsenic.

Where are the warning signs? Where are the scientist?
